Need advice

I am 22 years old. I have a 4 year old daughter. The mother is also 22 years of age. I was 17 when my daughter was born. The mother and myself lived at my parent’s home for one year after the child was born. We then broke up because she was caught fooling around. She moved in with her mother leaving the child in my custody. I was going to high school, working and taking care of the baby. 17 years old! Then one day I was at work and she took the baby from the babysitter. So in other words… after three months of no contact with the child she comes back to claim what is hers. She then begins to lay down rules like I get her only on the weekends. During this period I was employed and giving her cash for the baby. A year later she decides she wants full custody. I receive papers from her lawyer saying she wants support. She said she hadn’t received any. I know my fault… never kept track of the money I was giving her. I then have to get a lawyer. We went to court and the judge gave her full custody and I got visitation every other weekend. I also had to pay the correct amount of child support through the FRO. The child support part is fine with me. If that is what I am supposed to pay according to the law then I will pay. My problem is the custody. Why does she get custody? What makes her more competent than me as a parent? Now she often tells me that she is going to go to court to take away my access. Why rights do I have? Can she easily change my access? I have never missed a support payment and the child has never been mistreated. The only problem is that the mother and I do not get along. All I know is that I cannot afford a lawyer (and I will never trust one). The last time I had the lawyer I ended up losing 12000$ in legal fees. Now I have nothing. I just scrape by every month to pay my bills. Anyone have any advice?
