child custody and access assessments

x, who now has interim custody of our 17 month old has made an application for an order requiring a psychological assessment and report be done. this is in response to my application for joint custody and guardianship and increased access. she wants a psychologist of her choice to do the evaluation and for us to share the costs.

what are these assessmants all abouit? risks? rewards?

any advice would be appreciated
